The newly founded Department of Life Sciences of Trieste University originates from the fusion of five departments, the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Macromolecular Chemistry, the Department of Biology, the Department of Physiology and Pathology the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Psycology.

The Department of Life Sciences of Trieste University, in addition to its role as an important centre of learning and education, is also a dynamic centre at the forefront of scientific and technological research. It is fully integrated within the University science network, a context requiring interdisciplinarityamongst different sectors and capacity to elaborate integrated forms of knowledge, which is increasingly necessary to understand complex systems, to deal with changes and to develop creativity.

The Department staff in involved in the School of Doctorate in Nanotechnology, in Molecular Biomedicine, Neurosciences and Cognitive Processes, and collaborate to other Ph.D. Programs.

The Researchers in the Department of Life Sciences collaborate with over fifty foreign institutions, both academic and industrial, with several leading National Research Laboratories and Universities, and Italian and international Companies. The Departments employs over 200 researchers, 100 of whom are permanent professors and researchers, and has an outstanding record of publications in prestigious international journals.
